Potty-Training Tips for Parents

1.      Use potty-friendly clothing.

  • Dress toddlers in clothing that is easy for them to remove, pull up and pull down. This will facilitate their ability to go to the bathroom on their own when they feel they really need to go so that they won't have an "accident."
  • Avoid overalls, snap-bottom shirts/pants, pants with belts or drawstrings, onesies, tights and tight clothing-basically, avoid any clothing that a toddler can't undo himself or herself.
  • Teach your child how to put on and take off his or her clothes. Place special emphasis on those items of clothing that need to be pulled down/up/aside to use the potty.

2.      Train with love.

  • Express joy whenever your child uses the potty: get excited, dance around, give high-fives- don't be ashamed to be silly! You can also set up a reward system; however, avoid food as a reward, as it can foster bad habits.
  • Stand on the Word of God for victory in the area of potty training, and sing your profession of faith to your child. This will serve to encourage your child, and it won't be long before he or she sings with you!
  • Let the peace of God direct you in ministering to your child about "accidents." Be very sensitive and loving when pointing out the mistake, making sure that he or she understands that you know it was not intentional. Make clear to your child what you expect the next time.
  • Be patient. Maintain control of yourself during this process. You can make the difference between this experience being one of fun and enjoyment or one of misery for you and your child.
  • Be faithful in taking the time to make potty training your child a priority. Your expectation will not be left unrewarded.
