Have you ever gotten caught up in a situation from which you couldn’t break free? Most of us have experienced the fear or frustration of trying to deal with an issue that seems to overwhelm us. We can reach a point where all we can see is the problem in front of us, and we don’t know where to turn for answers. Fortunately for us, when we call out to God for help, He’s ready and willing to step in and pull us out of the pit.
Conversations with God are the essence of prayer, and these conversations can take many different forms. Prayer does not have a formula, because it comes straight from the heart. We can have complete trust that we can give Him whatever tangled mess we struggle with, and He’ll work it out perfectly. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28, NLT). There’s nothing too hard for Him to fix.
When we’re doing God’s will, there’s bound to be trouble that rises up against us. He doesn’t assure us life will always be easy; in fact, He tells us that obeying Him actually draws persecution to us like a lightning rod. But we can have confidence in knowing that we will prevail when we stay connected to Him, because He has prevailed. “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you]” (John 16:33, AMPC). Jesus had this kind of power because He stayed connected to the Father through constant prayer; the same authority is available to us by faith.
As God’s children, we pray out of gratitude and thanksgiving for what Jesus did to put us back into right-standing with God. The power in our prayers comes from our joy in knowing that all is well with us, regardless of what we’re experiencing in the physical realm. Deliberately praising and thanking Him, despite what we’re going through at the moment, puts us in a position to receive deliverance from trouble. “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry…The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles” (Psalm 34:15, 17). Our heavenly Father will always rescue us when we call to Him.
Sometimes we feel we’re in so deep, we don’t even know the right words to pray. God will never leave us alone, and He gave us the Holy Spirit to help us in this area. When our spirits are so troubled we don’t know where or how to begin, He’s got us covered. “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26, NKJV). We don’t have to depend on our intellect when the Spirit prays on our behalf.
God loves us and He doesn’t want to see us suffer. Calling to Him for help, and believing we receive what we ask, puts us directly in touch with Him. Our prayers of faith are always heard.
