Empowered, Enabled, and Equipped

Adversity can come in many different forms, and we can choose to deal with it in one of two ways. Trying to solve problems by relying on our own resources is one strategy, but there always seems to be that angle we didn’t think of that sinks us deeper into trouble. The other option is to trust God to bring us out of the situation when trouble shows up. Unlike the rest of the world, believers who lean on Him are empowered, enabled, and equipped for success supernaturally.

We no longer have to struggle with issues and be defeated by them. Instead, we can rely on an infinite source of strength. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). When we’re at our weakest point, we can truly appreciate how God empowers us. Through Him, we have the ability not only to withstand but to succeed.

Believers have received authority over things that are real threats to the rest of the world. It doesn’t matter what the situation looks like on the physical level; remembering what Jesus said gives us courage when the spirit of fear tries to creep in and frighten us. “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). This doesn’t mean we’ll never face tough times, but it does mean we can triumph over them.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame Satan by speaking the Word of God (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). Jesus was physically weak after fasting for forty days, yet the power of what He said was undeniable. We can effectively resist adversity by following the same example. Our own words may be inadequate, but deliberately speaking God’s Word gives us access to the same authority that Jesus possessed. “Then the Lord reached out and touched my mouth and said, ‘Look, I have put my words in your mouth! Today I appoint you to stand up against nations and kingdoms. Some you must uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow. Others you must build up and plant’” (Jeremiah 1:9, 10, NLT).

Studying the Scriptures and meditating on them until they govern our every thought, word, and deed gives us real power and authority. God’s Word guides our lives, keeps us safe, and prompts us to make course corrections as needed on our Christian walk. It also equips us to handle any bad thing the enemy throws in our path, strip it of its powers, and ultimately turn it into something good. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17, NKJV). This is all because of Christ in us.

We can trust that God will never abandon us in bad times, and that we’ll always have help and deliverance when we need it. The knowledge of this allows us to live the kind of life He wants us to have, and it makes us powerful witnesses of His grace. “He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant…” (2 Corinthians 3:6, NLT). The supernatural abilities we receive equip us to be radically different from the world and stand out as God’s people.
