Free from the Curses

Sept. 12, 2018 | By Taffi Dollar

When we hear the word “curse,” many of us think of our favorite horror movie or comic book. Curses actually exist, though, and they’re not something to be taken lightly. However, believers don’t need to fear them because Jesus Christ has freed us from the power of the curses that once were part of everyday life. The finished works of Jesus redeemed us from danger and made it possible for us to receive all of the blessings with none of the curses.

The curses that resulted from sin in the garden of Eden were a force to be reckoned with, but Jesus’ death and resurrection cancelled them for those who believe the gospel. Our faith moves us out from under the curses and positions us to receive God’s blessings. Jesus’ blood made those blessings available and no curse is strong enough to cancel them. “But how can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned?” (Numbers 23:8, NLT).

Although we’ve been redeemed from the curses, they still hold power over people who don’t fully understand grace and how it can impact every part of their lives. Knowing exactly what the Scriptures say about the benefits of being God’s children gives us an advantage. However, if we’re unaware that we’ve been redeemed from sickness, disease, lack, and poverty, we’ll meekly accept them in our lives. Healing is available to us (Isaiah 53:5), as well as abundance and prosperity on all levels (Philippians 4:19).

The Law of Moses focused on the necessity of the children of Israel acting, first, through self-effort, to try to earn God’s blessings; not keeping all the requirements resulted in multiple curses (Deuteronomy 28:15-68). Many people still try to live by self-effort. Failing to understand that Jesus’ perfect sacrifice delivered us from self-effort keeps them under those curses, but Christians receive God’s blessings as a gift from Him, without the need to work for them. “He will save you from death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war. You will be safe from slander and have no fear when destruction comes. You will laugh at destruction and famine; wild animals will not terrify you. You will be at peace with the stones of the field, and its wild animals will be at peace with you. You will know that your home is safe. When you survey your possessions, nothing will be missing” (Job 5:20-24, NLT). When others are struggling, we live in peace and safety.

This peace we enjoy includes peace of mind when others are tormented by fear, worry, stress, and anxiety. Peace from God is one of the many blessings we receive by trusting in Him. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). No matter what trouble is around us, we’re secure in the knowledge that God will deliver. Trouble can’t rob us of the inner peace we have from Him.

The condemnation and threat of punishment accompanying the curses before the cross don’t apply to believers after the cross. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1, 2, NIV). For us, the bad things are gone and only the good things remain. This completely transforms our lives!

Sometimes Christians can take for granted what we have now that we didn’t have before Christ. We can forget and become complacent about all the freedoms and blessings we receive but don’t deserve.
