God Works Through Us—If We Let Him

In these last days, one of the best things about being a born-again believer is the ability to do great things we could never do on our own. We can look around us and see so many others trying to accomplish tasks through their own efforts, with varying degrees of success. What gives us such a tremendous advantage, and makes us so successful, is the Holy Spirit working in and though us. Christ empowers us to break down any limitation the world has set up, but only if we let Him.

This indwelling of the Holy Spirit happened during the first Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 2:1-4), and He has never left us since. This was prophesied long before it happened. “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit” (Joel 2:28, 29). Voluntarily choosing to enlist God’s help allows Him to work miracles that simply aren’t possible in the natural realm, but are everyday occurrences in the supernatural.

For us, this means that Christ helps us reach people that are otherwise unreachable, change minds that seem to be unchangeable, and bring new understanding to people hopelessly confused by the world’s way of thinking. It can be frustrating to watch family, friends, and loved ones who don’t understand the Gospel of Grace struggle through life, and it’s normal to want to help them. We can get tired and frustrated ourselves if we try this through our own efforts, but God gives us limitless strength and energy. “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:28-31).

During His earthly ministry, Jesus healed the sick and the lame, restored sight to the blind, and even brought the dead back to life. He has given us the power to do this, and much more. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do…” (John 14:12). God has a definite agenda for the good things He wants to do in our lives and in the world, and enlisting His help allows us to be His hands and feet.

Trusting Him to work through us gives us perfect ideas and strategies that don’t come from us, but from a higher source. Whether or not it makes sense to our logical minds at the time is beside the point; we simply need to believe that He wants the best for us. Allowing Him to be our ally is always our best course of action.
