Living in Abundant Health

We all aspire toward good physical and mental health, but many people often settle for something less. We can just accept the sickness and disease that afflicts us, but the truth is that perfect, abundant health is God’s will for us. There will always be people who think that poor health has to be a part of their lives, but this isn’t so. We can choose to agree with either what the world says about healing, or what God says; agreeing with Him produces supernatural results.

The world defines the word “miracle” as an occurrence that can’t be explained by natural or scientific laws, and is therefore attributed to a higher power. Most of us have heard doctors mention miracles for which they can’t take the credit. Many in the medical community still don’t understand this, but miracles are real. Miracles happened for the woman with the bleeding disorder who Jesus healed (Luke 8:43-48), the man from whom Jesus cast out demons (Mark 5:1-13), and countless others who came into contact with Him.

As believers, we don’t have to tolerate illness or poor health. This is a radical concept that the world doesn’t comprehend, but faith in God’s willingness and ability to heal gets results on all levels. “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14). Doctors and health care professionals do the best they can, but true healing only comes about when God works through them to accomplish His purpose. Sometimes we praise the doctors for good results when God is the one who should get the recognition and the glory.

It’s no coincidence that healing is mentioned in conjunction with salvation, peace, and truth. God’s Word is truth, and when we base our belief system on what He says, we experience a peace that can only be found in Him. Regardless of what the world tells us, trusting God for good health allows Him to heal us where we need healing. “Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth” (Jeremiah 33:6).

Everything in the physical realm begins in the spiritual realm, and good health is within our power to claim. Our minds are powerful, and what we think about for an extended period of time can either keep us well or make us sick. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). Sometimes we see people who hang onto resentment, anger, bitterness, stress, worry, and anxiety for so many years that they develop ulcers, coronary issues, or other health problems. On a physical level, the body reacts to whatever thoughts we choose to harbor in our minds.

A positive attitude and a joyful outlook on life agree with what God wants for our lives. Good health doesn’t just exist in a vacuum; it’s a byproduct of operating according to the plans He has for us. Our souls, which are our thinkers and choosers, have the ability to decide whether or not to accept what God wants to give us. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2). He leaves the final decision up to us.
