No More Consciousness of Sin

Many of us are aware that being born again frees us from sin but, for that knowledge to really sink into our consciousness, we must change our way of thinking. It’s one thing to know something intellectually, and another thing entirely when we believe it in our hearts. Religion would have us believe that we’re still sinners even after we’re saved, but after we get born again, God chooses to completely forget about our past sins. Therefore, we should too.

This is easier said than done, but it can be done. Religion tells us we’re all sinners saved by grace, but the truth is we’re no longer sinners after we’ve been saved. It’s as simple as that, so we mustn’t let the world confuse us by complicating the matter. We can joyfully begin a relationship with Jesus because our old sinful self is gone. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We’re so accustomed to believing what the world tells us about who we are that it can be a shock to find out that the exact opposite is true. If we’re not careful, we can get loaded up with guilt and shame over something that happened in the past. We can wrongly think our behavior can make us saved one day and then unsaved the next. Our salvation is based in the finished works of Jesus, which can’t be undone no matter what we say or do. “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5, NKJV).

We were made sinners because of what Adam did, not because of anything we did. Likewise, when we’re in Christ, we’re sinless and perfect because of what Jesus did, independently of anything we do (Romans 5:12-15). Jesus overpowered sin when He went on the cross, and He gives us the same victory. “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6, NLT).

What matters now is our belief that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins for all time, and nothing more is needed. Sin is now a non-issue with God, but the devil keeps trying to throw it in our faces. The enemy’s only hope is to make us so sin-conscious that we begin having trouble believing that we’re really saved. We hear sermon after sermon in which the pastor seems so preoccupied with sin that we can end up with a seared conscience (1 Timothy 4:1, 2), but we must always remember it’s completely eliminated from God’s consciousness. “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17).

Studying our Bible to renew our minds gradually gives us a clear picture of our identity in Christ Jesus, and it helps us root out lies and misinformation that contradict the Word. It also keeps us grounded in the knowledge of who we really are in Him when the enemy attacks. “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26).  This is something the devil doesn’t want us to realize. Letting this thought permeate our consciousness changes everything!
