There’s nothing “creepy” about the Holy Ghost, but people who don’t understand Him may think about Him that way. He’s part of the Holy Trinity, and He was sent specifically to help and teach us. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, He sent the Holy Spirit to do things that not even He could do in a physical body. “However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]” (John 16:7, AMPC).
We can say we believe something, but it’s not real belief if it’s simply head knowledge. The Holy Spirit’s mission is to show us that unbelief, itself, is sin, and to convince us of this so thoroughly that our belief in Jesus and His finished works goes down into our hearts. “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me” (John 16:8, 9, NKJV). Religion focuses on our actions and tells us we must work hard to correct them; the Holy Spirit reveals that our belief in what Jesus has already done controls all of our actions and behaviors.
We can’t possibly live successful and productive lives without the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Life has way too many moving parts to be able to fit everything together through our own wisdom, and there’s always something lurking up ahead that we’ll never know about without Him revealing it to us. Worldly knowledge and wisdom is imperfect, but God’s perfect wisdom and knowledge give us insights others don’t have. “For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:8).
King Solomon was well-known for his wisdom, but he was wise enough not to depend on himself to make the right decisions as a leader. “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Kings 4:29, 30). The Holy Spirit knows all things, and He’ll give us the same wisdom that He gave Solomon. When we listen to Him closely, we can hear Him warning us away from dangerous situations, advising us of the wisest course of action when we’re making a decision, and correcting us when our thinking is wrong. It’s time to welcome the Spirit into our lives and acknowledge His presence.
