Trust God Enough to Be at Peace

Trust is important in any relationship, especially in our relationship with God. Relying on Him in every situation takes real work, especially when the devil shows up to try to destroy anything good in our lives. We sense we are approaching that level of trust when we find ourselves at peace, regardless of the circumstances.

When our trust in Him is great enough, the peace of mind that settles on us brings us rest. Trust and rest are linked, but we can’t rest if we’re stuck in unbelief. Money is one of the things that we can put our trust in instead of God. Jesus illustrated this point in His conversation with the rich young ruler, who refused to follow Jesus because he trusted his money more than God (Matthew 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-22; Luke 18:18-23).

Money can be unreliable, and those who trust in it exclusively can get caught in the “here today, gone tomorrow” syndrome when their wealth disappears. They lose their peace of mind when the money vanishes. It can’t buy true peace; that only comes from relying on God. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock” (Isaiah 26:3, 4, NLT). When our peace is challenged, we maintain our position of rest by relying on Him.

It’s tempting to trust in our physical senses, and it’s often easier to rely on them more than on God. But when what we see or hear around us contradicts the Word of God, believing that contradiction will move us out of our peace. The world will exert pressure on us, and we must make an effort to stay at rest. “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief” (Hebrews 4:11). Our rest is a picture of our trust.

We get confused if we don’t stand firmly on the Word. Our senses can fool us into thinking that what’s going on in the world is the truth. The enemy lies to us, and listening to those lies moves us into stress, anxiety, and unrest. We can trust that God will always tell us the truth. “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).

Trusting money more than God brings us unnecessary pain and trouble “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10). Trusting God has multiple benefits which extend way beyond just financial peace. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine” (Proverbs 3:5-10, NLT). It’s up to us to decide what, or who, to trust.
