For the week of March 12, 2018 Resting in the Finished Works of Christ

Many of us have become accustomed to putting forth our best effort in whatever we do, and normally there’s nothing wrong with giving one hundred ten percent. We encounter problems, however, if we depend on ourselves as our own source. It can be stressful and frustrating to think we have to make ourselves successful, and that we’re the ones to “make it happen.” This kind of mindset can lead to exhaustion and burnout with little to no results; fortunately, two thousand years ago, Jesus did everything necessary for our success

Hard work is fine, but we can rest in the finished works of Christ while we work. At the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, the last thing He said before dying was, “It is finished.” He transitioned the previous Law of Moses, which depended on self-effort, to the current law of grace, which is established on what Jesus did. A relationship with Him gives us everything we need for a godly life.

We can dispense with the religious definition of “godly” and replace it with the scriptural truth. In everyday terms, living a godly life means having and enjoying everything that Jesus had. Jesus was successful, prosperous, joyful, influential, delivered, blessed, and victorious over adversity. We can claim these same things by faith because as He is, so are we in this world.

Under the law, real curses existed that kept the people from realizing their true potential. Jesus redeemed us from the law when He hung on the cross to become a curse for us, to take it away. True rest comes from knowing that although one man brought sin to all mankind because of what he did in the garden of Eden, another man brought righteousness to everyone by what He did on the cross. The burden of self-effort has been removed permanently.

Prayer:

God, what Your Son did on the cross removed the burden from us of working our way to heaven through self-effort. Christ’s finished works made available to us an amazing life we could never hope to achieve ourselves, and we thank You for that. In Jesus’ name, amen.
