Finding Peace in the Midst of Turmoil

Life can be a mixed bag. It has its high points, but it’s never completely trouble-free; sooner or later adversity is bound to show up. Sometimes the problem looks so bad that we feel overwhelmed and ready to give up. The good news is that when peace of mind is far from us, there’s someone greater than us who can help, if we reach out to Him in faith.

Issues we’ve been wrestling with can take a turn for the worse. We can be blindsided by trouble that pops up seemingly out of nowhere. Thankfully, regardless of how big and scary our situation looks, God is bigger and He’s on our side. This is something He wants us to place our full faith in.

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?  (Mark 4:37-40).

The world has a way of magnifying what seems like a negative, hopeless situation so much that we can end up feeling defeated. However, as believers, we don’t have to settle for that. Studying what God’s Word says in this area shows us another side to the situation. “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus turns defeat into victory.

Peace is God’s will for us. The environment we live in is certainly not peaceful, but meditating on the Word and believing it shields us from fear and other destructive emotions. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…” (1 Corinthians 14:33). All around us we may see people who are fearful and afraid; we mustn’t let their fears influence us. Trusting in the master author allows Him to rewrite lives of fear into lives of faith.

We find peace in the midst of whatever life storm we find ourselves in if we completely rely on God’s ability—and His will—to rescue us from it. There will always be something that’s just too big for us to handle alone; when it’s upon us, we can trust in Jesus to walk with us through it. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). Jesus is the Prince of Peace who can give us what the world can’t. Refusing to let fear rob us of the peace He wants us to have allows us to fully experience it.

When what’s going on around us is threatening, God can handle the situation much better than we can. There are things we’ll never be able to figure out, but trusting Him doesn’t require intellectual understanding. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Believing that God is willing and able to deliver us brings us total peace in the eye of the storm.
