God’s Favor: Our Divine Safeguard Against Evil

Believers living in Christ enjoy multiple benefits that His grace provides on every level. It’s true that our final destination in heaven is established, but until then, we still have to live in a wicked, sinful world. God always remembers every detail concerning our safety and security, and He takes great care to protect us daily. Regardless of what the devil throws at us, nothing is stronger than God’s protection.

Faith in what Jesus did to save us from the destructive power of sin is just a start. Living under grace means sin is no longer an issue for us; however, our less-than-ideal external environment is still full of viruses, disease, and physical danger. For those who don’t know Christ this could be a problem, but for us, God has already taken care of these very real risks. Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction…” (Psalm 103:1-4, NKJV).

Protection and deliverance aren’t just words or concepts, but a real person. In the Old Testament, God promised to send us a Savior who would deliver those who rely on Him. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions(Psalm 107:19, 20, NKJV). Jesus, who is God’s grace in human form, is also the Word that was promised. We activate the barrier of God’s protection through faith in Christ.

Plenty of things can happen over which we have no control. However, God loves us and wants the best for us. Depending on Him as our source of protection keeps us connected to Him in the same way that branches stay alive by staying connected to the vine. “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4). Continuing to trust God in times of trouble allows Him to continue defending us.

Believing strongly enough that God is our security leads us to verbally confess it. This is an important step, because we tend to speak what we believe. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21). Our speech carries great weight; it’s therefore essential that we speak the right words to activate God’s covenant of safety.

God has always offered refuge and safety for those who run to Him when trouble threatens. David experienced this firsthand when King Saul set out to kill him. “And David spoke unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies” (2 Samuel 22:1-4). Not a hair was harmed on David’s head; belief in God’s commitment to our protection gives us the same advantage.
