For the week of March 27, 2023 Strength in the Midst of the Storm

Most of us were taught self-sufficiency at a very early age. The thinking behind it is to do for ourselves and rely on our own abilities. The danger of this mindset is that when the storms of life hit—and it’s guaranteed that they will—we can find ourselves in over our heads and unable to free ourselves from a painful situation. It can come as a shock to realize that we’re not as strong as we thought we were; in times like this, we’re wise to look for supernatural help.

It's unrealistic to think we can skate through life untouched by adversity. Jesus told His disciples that they would encounter tribulation in the world, but also that He had overcome the world. Trusting in Christ, who even overcame death, to get us through something that seems overwhelming gives us peace.

Having faith in our own strength is foolish, because eventually our strength will reach its limits. To overcome adversity, we must find our strength in the Lord and in the power of His might. Even the apostle Paul had to learn this. When he begged God to take away what he struggled with, God answered that His grace was sufficient for Paul because His strength was made perfect in weakness.

God will never abandon us. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Those who depend on themselves will become weak and tired and fall in exhaustion, but those who trust in Him will run and not grow weary. When we rely on God, He’s our strength and our song.
When we’re worn out from the struggle, God wants us to run to Him. He’s our refuge, our strength, and a very present help in trouble. Depending on Him to empower us to overcome tribulation enables us to dominate situations that defeat others.

Prayer:

Lord, we were never meant to struggle with hardships and trials on our own. Your Word tells us over and over that depending on You when trouble hits allows You to walk us through the situation. We’re thankful for Your deliverance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
