For the week of December 24, 2018 The Gift of Speaking in Tongues

Our prayer lives are an important part of our Christian walk, yet some people aren’t aware of the resources we can gain access to by praying in the Spirit. Speaking in tongues is a grace gift directly from the Holy Spirit, but there is widespread misunderstanding about it. We don’t have to be afraid of it, or question whether people still do this in the 21st century. Tongues is just as valid today as it was at the time of the first Pentecost.

After Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Ghost filled the disciples and caused them to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Those hearing them were amazed. Some people doubted the authenticity of this type of prayer, while others mocked them. Likewise, when we pray in tongues, others may not understand what we’re doing. However, we can disregard scoffing and skepticism from others because we have something powerful at our disposal.

Praying in tongues is a supernatural gift, far above the natural realm in which the world operates. The natural man doesn’t receive the things of the Spirit of God because they are foolishness to him; he doesn’t know them because they are spiritually discerned. The person who speaks in an unknown tongue doesn’t speak to men, but unto God. In the spirit, that individual speaks mysteries.

Tongues allows us to pray the perfect prayer. It bypasses intellectual reasoning and unlocks wisdom and knowledge God put in us that we may not even know we have. Tongues was given to us specifically to use while we’re still living in an imperfect world operating with our own imperfect knowledge; when we get to heaven, we won’t need it any more. When that which is perfect is come, that which is in part will be done away.

We can depend on the Holy Spirit to build up our faith. We can trust Him to give us what we need on a daily basis. Speaking in tongues is critical to our success.

Prayer:

God, there are things in life that we don’t know that can be made plain to us by praying in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues gives us insight, wisdom, and knowledge the world doesn’t have. Thank You for this gift. In Jesus’ name, amen.
