For the week of December 19, 2022 The Spirit of God’s Favor

The entire world needs God’s favor, but few understand how to receive it. Most people think they must work hard and do everything right to earn it. However, unlike under the Old-Testament Law of Moses, we’re free from useless self-efforts to please God and appease His anger. God isn’t angry anymore; if we’ve accepted His Son, He’s already pleased with us.

Although Jesus preached the law during His ministry, He taught it from the perspective of God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness. Those who believed Him and continued in His Word knew the truth, and the truth made them free. Jesus, Himself, was full of grace and truth. Moses may have given the law, but grace and truth came only by Jesus.

The truth is that God has already decided to show us favor and dismiss our past shortcomings; this differs from what religion tells us. The law only serves to make us conscious of our sins. However, if we’ve been born again, we no longer have to rely on the Ten Commandments to guide us through life. Grace has replaced the law, and the Holy Spirit is the administrator of this new covenant.

The Spirit is the one who imparts God’s unearned, unmerited favor to us. The law entered that sin might abound, but where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. Sin doesn’t have dominion over the born-again believer because that person isn’t under the law, but under grace. The law wasn’t made for the righteous, but for sinners; however, we’ve been brought out from under the law and made righteous because of our faith in Jesus Christ.

As Christians, we’re in right-standing with God not because of what we do, but because of what Jesus already did. Just as one man’s disobedience made many people sinners, another man’s obedience made many righteous. That other man is Jesus. Our trust in Him and in what He did for us is all we need in life.

Prayer:

Lord, we don’t have to depend on our own performance to please You. Your Spirit of grace has freed us from our self-efforts, and we now can receive the goodness You want to give us simply by faith in Your Son. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
